monkeys looking at each other. Photo Lottie Eriksson

I met these monkeys on the Top of the Rock; Gibraltar. Although I payed humans for the trip up I felt more like a guest of the monkeys. How they let us walk around, taking pictures and being there side by side with them was a priviliege. Occationally one would jump up on your (read: my) shoulders or try to nick whatever you carried in search for something good. The restaurant doors had to be thoroughly closed when you walked in or out because the monkeys seemed to have a constant lookout for slow-closing and leeped in there in a second heading towards the food department.

They are the only wild population of monkeys in Europe. For all what historians knows they have inhabited the rock for 1300 years or more. Read more at Wikipedia >
